2010 Composition/Creative Writing Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year was drawing near. Mother had insisted that I clean the old attic. I armed myself with a vacuum cleaner. As I went up, I groaned as a musty smell greeted me. As I opened the door that lead to the attic, I grimaced. “Creeak…” the door creaked open. “ Aah…choo!” I sneezed. Quickly, I set out to work with great reluctance. As I finished the vacuuming, I started to shift the objects into new, orderly positions. As I tossed an old shoe box away, I spotted many pairs of beautiful peranakan beaded slippers. To my pleasant surprise, they fitted me perfectly! I let out a hoot of glee and put them carefully into a big box that I found. Altogether, I had found 10 pairs of beaded beauties.

I struggled to carry them down. Mother saw me and asked, “Meiling, what are you doing?” I smiled a broad grin and set down my new found treasure down. I took out all the slippers. Mother gasped in wonder and remarked, “My! You have found grandma’s slippers! I will call her and let her know!”

I waited for Grandma’s answer. She said that I cold keep them if I wanted to. I jumped for joy and thanked her repeatedly. She was glad that I liked them.

Look like my attic cleaning ordeal turned out to be pleasurable after all. I placed my prize amongst my peranakan shoe collection and smiled; now, I had a total of 15 shoes. I decided to wear them during Chinese New Year. One for each day! It sounded good! I resumed cleaning the attic hoping to find more treasures. If your parents ever ask you to clean anything anywhere, do not take it as a chore. Think positive! You can never tell. You might find some “treasures” too!

2010 Composition/Creative Writing - Kidnapped

"Give me the ransom!" "No!" I sighed as I watched my brothers played with their action figures. I reminded me of the time I was kidnapped. Let me tell it to you.

"Dad! you are so..." I grumbled. "What?" my dad asked and slapped me. Overcome with anger, I ran out of the door angrily. As soon as I did that, I knew I had made a mistake. I still did not turn back, I was fuming mad. Why did I make such mistake? It was 9.30pm at night. the streets were deserted. As I hurried owards my friend's house, I had creepy feeling of being followed... I stopped for a brief second. From the corner of my eye, I spotted a figure in black closing in on me. He advanced on me slowly and deliberately. I spun around the flee. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, But kidnapper was faster. He pounced on me, a satisfied and grin lingering on his lips.

Knowing that I could not escape, i stopped squirming as he slapped a smelly wet cloth over my face. A dreadful pungent smell invaded my nostrils. My limbs went weak and I blacked out.

When I came to, I was gagged and bound. I caught a glimpse of my adbuctor as my eyes adjusted to darkness. He was looking at me. "So lad, your parents will pay for this!" I took a closer look at him. Could it be? Oh! it was my uncle stocky! He had fought with Dad and must have wanted to revenge! As he went out to get tea, he called, "Good bye Charlie! Hope you have a nice time!"

As soon as he was out, I put my hands to my pocket and get a twig I had kept with me all the while, I scratched at the rope and it came off slowly. I tugged at my rope and it come off. I took off my gag and tiptoed out. The coast was clear. i gained courage and ran towards a public telephone and punched in the numbers. Soon, the sirens were music to my ears.

At home, I only realised how important families were.
